Frequently Asked Questions
What are fibroids?
Fibroids are benign tumors that grow inside the uterus, within the wall of the uterus, or outside of the uterus. They are different from uterine polyps and endometriosis. Nearly 70% of women develop a fibroid at some point in their life.
What are the symptoms of fibroids?
Fibroids don’t always cause symptoms, but the most common ones include heavy menstrual bleeding, the feeling of an enlarged pelvis, frequent urination, constipation, and lower back pain. Symptoms may vary based on the number and location of fibroids in your uterus.
Should I have a fibroid removed?
If you’re experiencing heavy menstrual bleeding or pelvic pain, fibroid removal may be an ideal treatment option. There are many ways to remove fibroids and, depending on your wishes, this can be done either surgically or with minimally invasive procedures.
What are my treatment options?
Many women elect to have a hysterectomy; however, this will eliminate your chances for pregnancy in the future. Other surgical options include myomectomy (using a small tool to cut out the fibroids) and endometrial ablation (burning away the lining of your uterus). Nonsurgical and minimally invasive options include medication for pain management and uterine fibroid embolization (UFE).
What is UFE?
Uterine fibroid embolization involves using a small catheter to inject microspheres into the blood vessels that feed the fibroids in your uterus. The blood supply is closed off in this specific area and the fibroids shrink and die.
Is UFE safe and effective?
While a hysterectomy is the only procedure 100% guaranteed to stop future fibroid growth, UFE has shown a high level of success for this outcome: nearly 90% for most women. UFE has been performed in hospitals and clinics for over 20 years, and most patients have little to no complications or side effects.
Is UFE covered by insurance?
UFE is covered by most insurance plans and Medicare. Your out-of-pocket payment amount can vary based on your plan’s coverage and deductibles.
What can I expect during my recovery time?
The recovery time for UFE is very short, and you can expect to need prescribed painkillers for a week or less after the procedure.
