What Is Fibroid Embolization?
Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a safe, effective treatment for fibroids that has been used by doctors for over 20 years. The fibroids, or tumors, that grow on the uterus require a constant supply of blood to thrive. UFE takes advantage of this fact to target the fibroids. This minimally invasive procedure doesn’t remove the uterus. A small incision is made in the leg to gain access to the femoral artery, and then a long, flexible catheter is inserted into this artery and guided into the smaller arteries that supply the fibroids with blood. Once it has reached its target, the catheter releases tiny microspheres into the artery, blocking the blood flow to the tumors, which in turn shrinks the fibroids and eventually kills them. This procedure causes little downtime and you can expect to return to normal activities in a couple of days.
